Bull By The Horns

CHAZART

THE BRIEF

Create something in the South African fine art space that had never been done before.

The goal was to bridge the gap between fine art investment and everyday South Africans, offering anyone the chance, for just R100, to own a Chazart self-portrait valued at over R150,000–R200,000.

THE APPROACH

01

Phase 1: Reframing Fine Art

Fine art is often perceived as exclusive, inaccessible, and reserved for the elite.

We identified an opportunity to disrupt this perception by repositioning fine art as:

  • Relatable
  • Aspirational
  • Accessible

The strategy was to create an emotional connection—if people could see themselves in the artwork, ownership would feel attainable rather than intimidating.

02

Phase 2: Creating an Irresistible Hook

We needed a concept that would instantly stop people and provoke a simple reaction:
“For R100… why wouldn’t I try?”

We developed a culturally recognizable and humorous visual inspired by the iconic satirical Dodgeball painting—a man grabbing a bull by the horns.

But with a twist:
The face was left blank.

This led to a powerful hook:
“Buy a R100 ticket and stand a chance to win this painting—with your face in it.”

The idea transformed the artwork into:

  • A personalized fine art piece
  • A status symbol
  • A playful, highly shareable concept

The Solution

A disruptive campaign titled “Bull by the Horns”, combining humor, cultural familiarity, and personalization to democratize fine art.

By turning the artwork into something participants could literally see themselves in, the campaign removed barriers to entry and created mass appeal beyond traditional collectors.

The Results

The campaign spread organically with minimal paid media, achieving:

  • Significant brand awareness beyond traditional fine art audiences
  • Strong engagement from everyday South Africans
  • Growth in social media following
  • A measurable increase in brand equity

Most importantly, it repositioned Chazart from an elite fine art brand to a culturally relevant and accessible creative force.

The Description of the Execution

The campaign rollout was intentionally simple and organic, designed for maximum relatability with minimal spend:

  • 1–2 core social media posts
  • 1 hero campaign video
  • Light influencer involvement (interpretation-style content)
  • Always-on promotion over 3 months

Tone:

  • Lighthearted
  • Playful
  • Accessible

Messaging focused on clear, compelling calls to action:

  • “Stand a chance to win a Chazart portrait of yourself.”
  • “Grab life by the horns.”
  • “Own a R150,000+ artwork—for just R100.”

CRT Create has been producing consistently excellent work for our marketing department. This includes the majority of our branding needs below the line, as well as some excellent above the line work including our first television commercial since 2008 - and probably our best one to date. This partnership has allowed Sea Harvest to really develop a strong brand identity over the past few years, and in doing so maintain our position of market leader in the frozen category and become the 7th most iconic brand in South Africa according to the 2016/2017 Ask Afrika Icon Awards

JACK PAROW, SOUTH AFRICAN RAPPER

Since I started using CRT Create my social media has really gone to the next level. I used to run most of my social myself and it took so much time out of my day and created so much extra stress but now I work with a team of creatives that understand my vibe and my vision and who I can trust to create content that truthfully brings accross my ideas no matter how far out or crazy. Nothing but love for them and I highly recommend them on all levels. Without them I would have probably been dead...or at the VERY least addicted to some form of anxiety medication.
